In Basmane, a district in the center of the Turkish port city of Izmir, the wheels of the smuggling industry keep turning.
Refugees crowd into small, cheap hotels, ask the smugglers' prices, buy life jackets, compare boats and engines in another store, wait for private minibuses to take them to the coast. They pawn their gold in jewelry stores, another store offers money transfers from Syria and, according to the International Organization for Migration (as of 20 April 2016), 376 migrants have drowned between the Turkish Aegean coast and Greece since the beginning of the year.
