In her works Tanja Boukal explores themes such as struggle for work and survival or migration and the related social deprivation.
The material she works in is threads, or textiles, that she makes using different techniques. The professionally mastered traditional craft of weaving and embroidery is augmented by Boukal’s sharp and empathic interest in human existence, such as when she embroiders photos from news reports on immigrants. The extremely difficult and time-consuming technique that Boukal chooses seems to emphasise the importance of the portrayed and to return a piece of human dignity to them.
