Cultures are characterised by mixtures. This is not just the case today; they were by no means homogeneous or pure in the past either.

In order to show this historical transculturality, Wolfgang Welsch uses art as a probe. For while transculturality was often viewed with reserve in political, social and psychological terms, it was far less controversial in the field of art, where it was actually welcomed and could be expressed comparatively unhindered. The book therefore uses art to illustrate historical transculturality. This is done using examples from all possible disciplines: from painting, sculpture, printmaking and architecture to literature, music, theatre, dance, opera and comics, as well as looking at all the continents and cultures of the world.
